The Initial Situation
The caesar research center (center of advanced european studies and research) is associated with the renowned Max Planck Society and conducts basic research in the field of neuroethology. Interdisciplinary basic research focuses on cellular signal processing and the neuronal basis of behavior.
For the relaunch of the website, a target group-oriented design should be developed, which on the one hand puts research in the foreground and on the other hand self-confidently sets itself apart from the usual representation of scientific institutes.
As the previous site was based on MODX, not uncommon in research circles, the new site should also be based on MODX.
The Design Concept
The customer's aim was to emphasize the special nature of the center's own research. Since the results of many projects are presented by means of impressive visualizations, the creative focus was on giving these results room to work. The black head area acts as a background against which photos and videos from the research areas can light up.
All in all, the surface leaves plenty of room for the content. Discreet polygons in the background, a self-confident colour concept, varied handling of the used widths or the polygonally "punched out" teaser images ensure a pleasantly easy viewing experience despite all the clarity and information orientation.
The Technical Implementation
The technical challenge was to implement the site with the Open Source CMS "MODX", which is not widely used in Germany, and to migrate to the current version "MODX revolution".
As with most of our projects, the responsive design was first developed and tested in a frontend prototype, based on Foundation 6.4 with SASS-precompiler, and then integrated into MODX.
