Relaunch for the Domstift Brandenburg Transformation for the 850th Birthday.

The Task

The Brandenburg Cathedral has a long tradition of changing its design.

In 2013 the task was to create an online image that reflects its rich diversity, invites users to discover, and prepared for the expected mass of visitors for the BUGA 2015.

Our Approach

The old site of the cathedral we'd rather not show. It was really old. To get an impression of the cathedral and its people we went to Brandenburg. We marveled at the protected world which the Cathedral - surrounded by schools, administration, kindergarten and shop - composes on an island in water-rich Brandenburg. About the beautiful and musically-friendly acoustics inside. About the varied architectural history of the building. About the people who work for the cathedral chapter and incorporate Christian rituals in the workday. About the tranquility, the vastness, the lightness that characterize the atmosphere on the Cathedral Island. Of this, we have tried to create images.

The Creative Approach

We made these pictures, with their contemplative quality, the creative focus of the design. We thought one could immerse themselves into the atmosphere of the cathedral as the image slider runs on the home as a screensaver.

Informational elements, such as the filterable calendar, news and content modules that combine clarity with a touch of spirituality, give a supportive effect. Not to be exaggerated of course - it is after all a Protestant cathedral.

In order to root the responsive behavior in the design, the concept was developed in close cooperation with screen designers and front end programmers in an HTML prototype.

Try it out:

IA and UX

In order to make the connectivity and uniformity of the various workspaces easily identifiable and accessible, we dedicated a page to each main topic.

To keep the experience compact and the navigation slim, we decided against submenus. All detailed information is easily accessible through content.

So for the user, the site is practically made up of eight overview pages.

A few Details

In a central calendar, all dates are entered and tagged by category. On the individual content pages the dates of the relevant category are displayed and can be filtered by the user according to subcategories.

For the administration, there is a separate calendar in a password protected area for internal appointments and planning of room occupancy.

Overview of the Cathedral Museum Exhibitions in the Slider Element

For the lovingly curated exhibitions in the Cathedral Museum we created a slider element, which presents the current exhibition and also allows one to get an impression of previous exhibitions.

At noon close your eyes and listen.

It is briefly mentioned upon entry - the architecture of the cathedral is designed to emphasize the sound of human voices as best as possible. Every afternoon at 12:00 the staff of the cathedral chapter meet in the crypt for noon prayer. If you want to listen to how this sounds, visit www.dom-brandenburg.de/en at noon and adjust your sound to a comfortable listening level.

The technical implementation

The first step of the creative, as well as the technical, development was the HTML prototype, in which gradually and iteratively the appearance and responsive behavior of the modules and page types were developed according to the principle "Content and Mobile First".

In accordance with the spirit of the site, we tried to be conservative with visual effects in the front end. The image concept brings details of the cathedral foundation to the stage  and produces a solid meditative atmosphere. A hierarchizing menu structure has been avoided in favor of a visitor-friendly, content-oriented navigation.

In the back end, the site was set up with TYPO3. Internal user areas for the organization of the choir and events were also taken into account.

Our focus in the technical implementation was, in addition to the adaptation of TYPO3 standard extensions like "tt_news" or "cal" and the development of responsive fluid templates, also on the development of individual extensions on the basis of Extbase frameworks.

Result

The result is a website that provides access to the different aspects of life in and around the cathedral. Atmospheric and informative. Allows one to experience a bit of the cathedral's ambiance and offers easy access to the offers and services of the cathedral foundation. Timeless and responsive, awarded with the Annual Multimedia Ward 2014 in silver.
